Spud Harvest

Normally for spud harvest we try to leave on a vacation but this year we spent our money on our kitchen. So with two weeks off of school and no where to go, Jared was asked to drive truck for farmer in our ward. Knowing it would bring in some extra cash, he accepted.

Jared drove the potato truck while the digger (the green truck) followes along just behind him and pulls up the potatoes along a conveyor belt and slowly drops them into Jared's truck. It can be a tricky job moving down a row together but interesting as well.
The Cross Over, the orange truck,  digs up a few rows of potatoes at a time and lays them all in a path for the digger to follow along and more easily pick up potatoes. The whole process is fascinating and since it all occurred just behind my backyard, I got to watch the whole thing. The kids got an even closer look as they each took turns going with Jared in his truck for the day.
After the trucks are all done, we can go in and glean the fields of the left over potatoes that didn't get picked up. There are tons of them left in the field.

Here, Jordyn and her little friend, Ellie, are finding potatoes. As you can see, there are a lot still lieing on the ground.
Lexie is hamming it up, and Mackenzie is showing off the big potato she found.
Our friends the Marshall's came and gleaned too. They are from St. George and had never even heard of gleaning a potato field before. They were super excited to experience gleaning and get fresh potatoes for free.

Here Cassidy and Elijah enjoy picking potatoes.
Now Shawn was downright giddy! He just made me laugh with his excitement over how many potatoes there were!
I'll be enjoying fried, baked, and mashed potatoes for a while!

I'm glad you took pictures of the spud harvest. The kids are so excited. What a great experience for them to go on Jared's truck with him. They will remember that!
